Upgrading Products Downloaded From GeoTargetingScripts.com After Wednesday, June 6, 2011

Simply overwrite the files in the existing ‘magiks_geo_targeting’ folder to upgrade. If moving from one product to another, be sure to overwrite ALL files. If updating the SAME product, you can generally get away with updating just ‘/magiks_geo_targeting/init.php’ and ‘/magiks_geo_targeting/magiks_geo_targeting.php’ unless otherwise noted.

Upgrading Products Downloaded From GeoTargetingScripts.com Prior To Wednesday, June 6, 2011

If your original download was from prior to Wednesday, June 6, 2011 the simple upgrade method above will not work. A lot of changes were made internally to ensure seamless upgrades moving forward. However, the upgrade should still be rather simple.

For each content block used in your posts / pages / widgets / and themes, a couple small adjustments have to be made. In the ‘m_geocountry’ shortcode we renamed the ‘countrycodes’ parameter to ‘locations’.

And, when using the shortcodes in theme files, if using the code as we suggested, your code will check to see if the ‘class’ exists before executing the shortcode. The class has been renamed to: ‘magiks_geo_shortcode_class’.

Manual Database Upgrades

Our products include GeoLite data created by MaxMind, available from http://www.maxmind.com/. Although not necessary, a new version of the databases are available for download each month. The database required is specific to the product that you are using. Please refer to the readme.html file that accompanies your product for specific instructions.

It’s perfectly fine and in fact Google themselves employ geo location on their pages all the time. When it becomes an issue is when you show different content to the Google Bots IP ranges… but when you are translating an IP Address to a geographic location (and not a device) there is nothing to worry about… Google Bots will just be treated as a U.S. web surfer, as they should.

MaxMind, the provider of the database that we use for our products answers this best. Here is the response pulled from MaxMind’s FAQ.

“EU” and “AP” codes are used in the country code field when there are no clear indications as to where the end users are located. For example, we may mark a corporate proxy located in London, GB as “EU” if we can see that the ultimate end users are connecting from various parts of Europe. Marking that IP as coming from London would not correctly represent where end users are coming from.

Please note “EU” and “AP” codes do not include all IPs covered under those respective regions. Blocking “EU” will only block IPs with the conditions described above and will not affect all the European countries with specific country codes. To block “EU”, you need to list the specific countries individually.

So, say for example you wanted to redirect just Canadians you would do this:

The “delay” attribute is optional. It defaults at zero and represents the number of milliseconds before the redirect will take place.

Now, if you wanted to redirect ALL countries EXCEPT say… U.S., Canada and the U.K. ( Great Britain ) you would do this:

“redirect=0″ says not to redirect the listed countries, but to redirect everyone else.

Now.. for the script you might do something like this to redirect JUST Canadian traffic:

You can put whatever you like in for the JavaScript. There’s lots of ways to skin the redirection cat. I used setTimeout so I can do a redirect if necessary.. the zero in the example above represents the number of milliseconds before the redirection will take place.

Now, if you wanted to redirect ALL countries EXCEPT the U.S., Canada and the U.K. ( Great Britain ), like the example above, you would do this:

So, the above code uses the PHP “not equal to” to ONLY execute the code when the visitor’s country isn’t in the group of listed countries. You may also use PHP: switch statements or include some elseif’s in there if you want to setup redirects to different pages for different countries.

As far as determining the correct IP Address of the user, we went beyond the standard way. The IP Address of the user, by the way, is what is used as a “look-up” in the MaxMind database to determine the location of the user. We accounted for proxy servers, etc. when checking the IP Address for better accuracy.

With that said, we still are not 100% accurate and don’t expect to ever be, and make no guarantees as such.

Note: This example involves the use of the PHP Script bundled with Geo City Plus. For an example using the m_quickgeo WordPress shortcode (found in all of our products), view this post.

$GEO_COUNTRY_NAME – displays the name of the country (i.e. United States)
$GEO_REGION – displays the 2-character region code (i.e. CA)
$GEO_REGION_NAME – displays the region name (i.e. California)
$GEO_CITY – displays the city name (i.e. Glendora)

{country} – displays the 2-character country code (i.e. US)
{country-name} – displays the name of the country (i.e. United States)

In the Geo City Plus product:

Tokens may also be used in other shortcodes within each product, not just the m_quickgeo shortcode.

Therefore, Google, prior to dynamically placing the AdSense ads, not only makes certain the ads are relevant ( in context ) but also checks the users IP address / browser settings to determine their language and country.

You could specify your main target country in Google Webmaster Tools which will help a lot for organic searches to make sure the areas in the world that you are targeting will land on your site most often.

To verify the above statements I looked at Google’s AdSense Help and saw this statement in regards to whether or not you need to use geo targetting for AdSense:

“AdWords advertisers can choose to show their ads only to certain locations and languages. The AdWords ads served on an AdSense web site will therefore depend on the advertiser’s geo-targeting and a user’s settings.”
